Walk & Canal Tour: Copenhagen Highlights + Changing of the Guards

Discover the very best of the Danish capital in a warm, personal, and authentic way. This unique, intimate small-group tour (maximum 12 people) is designed for travelers who love to fully explore a city on foot. Together, we combine Copenhagen’s most iconic highlights with secret corners, a ride on the public canal ferry, the water bus locals use, and a royal finale.

Whether you are a first-time visitor, a new resident, or a local rediscovering your own city, our small group size means there is always room for genuine conversation, curiosity, and connection.

The Journey: Land, Water & Royalty

  • The Adventure Begins: We start with a relaxed 1-hour walk through historic streets. You’ll experience legendary Copenhagen landmarks—like the historic Christiansborg Palace, the magical Tivoli Gardens, and the colorful waterfront of Nyhavn—alongside hidden spots most tourists completely miss.
  • Glide Through the Canals: Next, we hop aboard the electric canal ferry at the Black Diamond for a 25-minute ride past Børsen, the Opera House and Nyhavn. Relax and take in the stunning views of the city skyline and modern architecture from the water, while your local guide shares quirky facts, cultural insights, and stories that bring Copenhagen to life.
  • The Scenic Route & The Mermaid: Back on land, we continue our walk toward the historic, 17th-century star-shaped fortress, Kastellet, and say hello to the world-famous Little Mermaid.
  • Cozy Café Break & The Grand Finale: Along the way, we make a short, cozy café stop to rest, recharge, and enjoy a chat. We finish our journey at the majestic Amalienborg Palace or in Nyhavn, depending on the start time:
  • The 9:00 AM tour ends at Amalienborg at noon with the spectacular, full Changing of the Guards ceremony.
  • The 9:30 AM tour also sees the full Changing of the Guards at noon and then ends in Nyhavn.
  • The 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM tours end at Amalienborg with a smaller, more intimate ceremonial version of the guard change.
  • The 3:00 PM tour also ends at Amalienborg.
  • The 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM tours see the smaller guard change and then end in Nyhavn.

Important information
  •  Plan Your Arrival Ahead of Time: Copenhagen is easy to navigate, but public transport delays, rush hour traffic, or finding your way from the underground Metro can take longer than expected. Because our tour starts promptly and we have a ferry to catch, we cannot wait for late arrivals. Please make sure to plan your route and transit tickets before your tour!
  • Check out our step-by-step Meeting Point & Transit Guide here to find the exact spot under the station clock, download the local ticket app, and see our top insider tips for a stress-free arrival.
  • Fitness & Distance: This is an intermediate-level walking tour. We don't rush, but we do cover a significant distance over 3 hours. To get the most out of this experience, you should be comfortable being on your feet and walking for the duration of the tour. Therefore, it is unfortunately not suitable for those with walking difficulties.
  • If the canal ferry is full: The canal ferry is a wonderful piece of public transit. In high season it can be full on busy weekends and sunny afternoons, and then we don’t skip a beat! We simply walk the scenic route of about 2 km along the canals instead. You won’t miss a single highlight—plus, we'll throw in a couple of extra bonus stops along the way!

Whether you’re traveling solo or with friends, this is more than just a sightseeing tour—it’s a welcoming, active experience filled with stories, smiles, and a true local perspective on Copenhagen. We can't wait to show you around!

Tivoli Gardens
The main entrance of Tivoli Gardens decorated for Christmas

We’ll stop outside the enchanting Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, and we will share its fascinating history and its role in inspiring Walt Disney.

New Carlsberg Glyptotek
The domed entrance of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek art museum

Glyptoteket, a glimpse of grandeur from the outside We’ll stop by the impressive Glyptoteket, one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful buildings. Founded by Carlsberg’s founder Carl Jacobsen, this museum is known not only for its world-class art collection, but also for its stunning architecture. From the outside, you’ll get a great view of its grand façade and the glass dome of the tropical winter garden inside. A quick but memorable stop that blends culture, history, and a touch of elegance.

Christiansborg
A small group with their host in front of Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen

Together, we’ll explore the history and importance of Christiansborg Palace, the seat of Danish democracy. We’ll uncover tales of kings, queens, and modern politics, and there’s a good chance we’ll also see the royal horses.

The Royal Library
A small group with their host by the fountain in the Royal Library Garden

We conclude this part of our tour at The Royal Library, Slotshaven and the iconic Black Diamond, a stunning piece of modern architecture that serves as a cultural and literary hub for Copenhagen. From here, we’ll continue our journey with a ride on the public canal ferry, the water bus locals use, offering unique views of the city from the water.

The Canal Ferry
Guests and their host on the deck of the public canal ferry in Copenhagen harbour

The tour includes a ride of about 25 minutes on the public canal ferry, the water bus locals use, from the Black Diamond past Børsen, the Opera House and Nyhavn, with great views of the city’s canals. On weekdays, we almost always have the ferry to ourselves. As it’s a public ferry, seats can’t be reserved, and in high season it can be full on busy weekends and sunny afternoons (or occasionally canceled). If that happens, we walk the scenic route of about 2 km along the canals instead. To stay on schedule for the Changing of the Guards on the 09:00 AM tour, we shorten the route slightly elsewhere, and the total walking distance is 5 to 7 km. In this case, the tour includes a few different – but equally great – highlights, such as iconic Nyhavn and all the main sights normally seen from the ferry.

The Opera (Seen from ferry)
The Copenhagen Opera House seen across the harbour

From the canal ferry on Copenhagen’s scenic canals, you’ll get a fantastic view of the Royal Danish Opera House – an architectural masterpiece sitting proudly by the waterfront. Designed by renowned architect Henning Larsen, this modern landmark is one of the most expensive opera houses ever built and a true icon of Danish design.

Nyhavn (Seen from ferry)
Colourful houses and old wooden ships along the canal in Nyhavn

From the canal ferry, we’ll get a brief but beautiful stop at Nyhavn, Copenhagen’s most iconic harbor. With its colorful 17th-century townhouses and lively atmosphere, this historic waterfront is a must-see, and the perfect spot to return to after the tour!

The Gefion Fountain
Guide sharing a Nordic myth about the goddess Gefion with guests at The Gefion Fountain by the Copenhagen waterfront

Gefion Fountain is one of Copenhagen’s most impressive landmarks, located near the harbor and Kastellet fortress. This stunning fountain depicts the Norse goddess Gefion driving a group of oxen, symbolizing the legendary creation of Zealand. A must-see stop, it combines mythology, history, and beautiful craftsmanship, making it a perfect spot for photos and storytelling during your tour.

Kastellet
A small group walking between the long red barracks in Kastellet fortress

As part of our walk, we’ll explore Kastellet, one of the best-preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe. This historic site, built in the 1600s, is still an active military area but also a peaceful green oasis in the heart of Copenhagen. As we stroll through its scenic pathways, you’ll see the iconic windmill, historic barracks, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the resident swans.

Churchill Park

Churchill Park is a quiet green oasis in central Copenhagen, dedicated to the memory of Danish resistance fighters during World War II. Located next to the historic Kastellet fortress and near the Little Mermaid, the park features monuments honoring those who fought for Denmark's freedom, including a statue of Winston Churchill. It’s a meaningful stop for those interested in history, set in peaceful and scenic surroundings.

Kastelsmøllen

Kastellet, one of Europe’s best-preserved star fortresses, is a perfect blend of history and natural beauty. Built in the 17th century, this historic military site offers a peaceful escape with its grassy ramparts and scenic surroundings. On this stop, we’ll walk along the fortress walls, taking in panoramic views of the area and enjoying the serene atmosphere. As we stroll, we’ll see Kastelsmøllen, a charming old windmill that stands as a reminder of the fortress’s utilitarian past. Kastellet is more than just a historical site – it’s a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city, where the past meets the present in one of Copenhagen’s most picturesque settings.

The Marble Church
The Marble Church at the end of Frederiksgade, Copenhagen

Marvel at the breathtaking Marble Church, officially known as Frederik's Church, an architectural gem in Copenhagen. Completed in 1894 after more than 150 years of construction, this iconic landmark features one of the largest domes in Europe, inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. As we pause here, you'll hear stories of its fascinating history, including the challenges of its construction and its significance in Denmark's royal and religious heritage. From this spot, you’ll also enjoy stunning views of Amalienborg Palace, the royal family's residence, just a short walk away.

Amalienborg
Guests walking through Frederiksstaden towards the Marble Church, next to Amalienborg

Step into the heart of Danish royalty at Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the Danish royal family since 1794. This stunning complex consists of four identical Rococo-style palaces surrounding an elegant octagonal courtyard, with the equestrian statue of King Frederik V as its centerpiece. As we explore the area, you’ll learn about the history of the monarchy, the daily routines of the royal family, and the significance of the ceremonial Changing of the Guard, which takes place here every day at 12.00. From the courtyard, enjoy beautiful views of the Marble Church and the waterfront, showcasing Copenhagen's blend of history and charm.

The Changing Of Guards
The Royal Life Guards band marching at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen

The tours on the hour end at Amalienborg Palace with the Changing of the Guards. The half-hour tours (9:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM) end in Nyhavn; on the 9:30 AM tour we see the full Changing of the Guards at noon first, and on the 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM tours the smaller guard change.

If you join the 09:00 AM tour, we conclude at Amalienborg Palace just as the full Changing of the Guards begins at 12:00 PM. You'll have the perfect spot to witness this iconic royal tradition as the guards march into the palace square, sometimes accompanied by the Royal Danish Band.

If you join the 1:00 PM tour, we end at the same location, where you’ll still experience a smaller version of the guard change as the new shift quietly relieves the old. While not as ceremonial as the noon event, it offers a more peaceful and authentic glimpse into daily royal tradition.

An Aussie recommendation

Martin was an excellent guide, and provided a great introduction to Copenhagen. Being a local, he provided a great insight into growing up and living in this city, and his knowledge of history was excellent. He also managed to get us photos with the guards at the palace, that other tourists couldn't get, and had his secret spot for excellent photos for Changing of the Guard. I highly recommend this tour, and it will be a bonus if you have Martin as your guide.

Perfect tour of Copenhagen

Great experience with Martin as our guide! Great mix of seeing the key sites of Copenhagen along with historical references and nice views of the canal via ferry. Martin let us see and hear about some nostalgic stories while walking throughout the city. We got a front row spot for the changing of the guard based on his knowledge/ experience, and he went out of his way to take the group to the Nyhayn area AFTER our tour was completed.

A great day in Copenhagen

Kris was a fantastic guide! Fun, knowledgeable and personable! She kept us moving at a great pace. She even made sure we were in perfect spots for the changing of the guard. There were a couple of oldsters in our group, me being one, and I was able to keep pace with the breaks provided. What a wonderful experience. I’m sure she is one of the best in Copenhagen! So much history and information about builders, artists, philosophers, and all the kings. And several important women as well. Recommend!

Fantastic Walk & Canal tour with Alex!

Alex was a fantastic guide - The tour was well-paced, with just the right amount of time at each stop. He shared lots of interesting details about Copenhagen’s history and landmarks, and his explanations were clear, engaging, and easy to follow. We learned a lot while still having plenty of time to enjoy the sights. We did this on our 1st full day in Copenhagen. Highly recommend!
