The experience

Explore Nyhavn, Christianshavn, Christiania, Holmen & The Operapark

Discover the unique charm of Copenhagen’s neighborhoods Nyhavn, Christianshavn and Holmen on this personal walking tour, where contrasts in history, culture and everyday life shape the city. From colorful harbor fronts to quiet streets, from royal landmarks to alternative communities, this walk reveals Copenhagen as a city defined by balance and contrast.

The journey invites you to look beyond the postcard image and uncover the city’s hidden layers. Iconic sights blend naturally with lesser-known corners, and centuries-old traditions exist side by side with modern Danish life.

We stroll along the picturesque canals lined with colorful, historic half-timbered houses and feel the maritime atmosphere that once defined the city. Along the way, you’ll see where Hans Christian Andersen lived and hear stories that connect Copenhagen’s past with its present. A relaxed pause by the water sets the tone before we step into the creative spirit of Christianshavn.

As part of the walk, we make a short visit to Christiania. This brief stop offers insight into one of Copenhagen’s most debated and distinctive communities, highlighting a strong contrast between alternative lifestyles, social ideals and the surrounding city.

The walk continues to Holmen, a former naval base turned peaceful neighborhood of architecture, culture and green spaces. Here, Copenhagen’s contrasts become especially clear. We round off the experience in the Opera Park with cake at Restaurant Væksthuset, surrounded by modern design and calm nature, the perfect ending to a cultural city walk.

With culture, contrasts and everyday hygge at its heart, this tour offers an authentic and unhurried experience. The small group size ensures personal insights, meaningful conversations and carefully chosen stops, leaving you with a deeper understanding of Copenhagen and the contrasts that make the city feel truly alive.

Broens Street food

Broens Gadekøkken is a vibrant open-air food market that showcases Copenhagen’s love of global flavors with a local twist. Founded in collaboration with culinary pioneer Claus Meyer, it combines the creativity of Copenhagen Street Food with a focus on quality, community, and sustainability. Taste dishes inspired by the world but rooted in Nordic gastronomy, from tacos to traditional Nordic specialties. This is more than just a food court—it’s a cultural meeting point where locals and visitors gather over great food.

Wilders Plads
Café Wilder and the yellow corner house on Sankt Annæ Gade by Wilders Plads in Christianshavn

Pause at Café Båden on Wilders Plads, a cozy retreat blending Danish hygge with maritime history. Enjoy a coffee as you hear stories of Christianshavn’s evolution, from Christian IV’s ambitious plans for a bustling trading hub to today’s tranquil canals lined with houseboats. Surrounded by historic warehouses and waterways, this stop offers a glimpse into Copenhagen’s layered identity—where past and present harmoniously coexist.

Our Saviour's church
The spiral spire of the Church of Our Saviour in Christianshavn

Our next stop is the magnificent Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke), a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and one of Copenhagen’s most recognizable landmarks. Its iconic golden spiral tower, with its 400 winding steps to the top, offers breathtaking views of the city for those brave enough to climb it. Built in the late 17th century, this church has been a beacon of faith, art, and resilience for over 300 years. As we pause here, you’ll hear stories about its fascinating history, including the construction of its unique tower, which was completed in 1752. This church is more than just an architectural wonder – it’s a symbol of Christianshavn’s vibrant history and community spirit. Take a moment to admire its stunning details, including the grand organ and the beautifully crafted exterior.

Christiania
Guests passing colourful murals in Christiania

As we approach the outskirts of Freetown Christiania, we’ll walk along the scenic paths of Christianshavns Vold, a green oasis surrounding this unique community. This area offers a more tranquil perspective of Christiania, far from its bustling center, where nature and history blend harmoniously. From here, you’ll get a glimpse into the spirit of Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood that has become a symbol of creativity, freedom, and alternative lifestyles since its establishment in 1971. While we won’t venture into the heart of Christiania, this peaceful walk around its edges allows us to appreciate its connection to the surrounding area and its impact on Copenhagen’s cultural identity. Take in the serene atmosphere as we stroll by the old ramparts, lined with trees and dotted with beautiful views of the canals. This is, in our opinion, the most hyggelig spot to enjoy Christiania’s unique character without the crowds.

Gunboat sheds

These historic gunboat sheds tell the story of Copenhagen’s maritime defense during the Napoleonic Wars. Built after the 1807 British attack, the sheds housed small, nimble gunboats designed to protect Denmark’s waters. Today, they’re repurposed as artist studios, embodying the city’s knack for preserving history while fostering creativity. As you explore this area, note how these modest buildings once played a crucial role in Denmark’s resilience and how they now serve as symbols of renewal and reinvention.

Copenhagen Opera house
The Copenhagen Opera House seen across the harbour

Copenhagen’s Opera House is a striking symbol of modern Danish design and generosity. Gifted to the city by Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, its dramatic architecture bridges Copenhagen’s historic core with its innovative future. Inside, its world-class acoustics set the stage for extraordinary performances, while its location on Holmen nods to the city’s naval heritage. From its grand terrace, enjoy views of Amalienborg Palace and the Marmorkirken, a historic axis connecting Denmark’s royal past to its cultural present.

The Opera Park

An urban oasis where lush landscapes meet contemporary design. The park’s greenhouse, Væksthuset, is a marvel of glass architecture, nurturing tropical and subtropical plants in the heart of the city. As you stroll through themed gardens and small waterways, reflect on Copenhagen’s dedication to creating spaces where nature, culture, and urban life thrive together. It’s the perfect place to unwind and embrace the city’s sustainable, people-centered vision.

The tour concludes with a cake at Restaurant Væksthuset, just a 10-minute walk from the starting point.

Lovely conversation and beautiful sites

We had a tour with just the two of us, plus one guide (MayBritt) and one guide in-training (Alex). We saw Nyhavn, Christiania, the Opera, and had a coffee stop and a (delicious) cake stop. We learned a bit about the history of Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish monarchy, and the Danish political system. The tour ended at the Opera House and my husband and I were able to catch the harbor bus afterward for a relaxing ride back. Recommended experience - bring comfortable walking shoes.

Six out of five!

A great 3 hours understanding Copenhagen away from the more obvious attractions. May-Britt was our guide and not only does she really know her facts, she gave us great insights into what it’s like to live and work in the city. She is a great guide who made sure she understood what we were interested in. Although we covered a lot of ground we were never rushed. If you don’t take this tour I’d pretty much guarantee you’ll never find some of the locations we went to. Highly recommended.

Hygge, Coffee, and Black Currant Cake

Chilly morning in March but we had a great time walking through Copenhagen near the canals. Tour guide is very knowledgeable and full of tips and recommendations for places to visit. The coffee and cake were great and fun additions to the tour. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Tour Experience

Michael and Morten (in training) did a fabulous job with this great tour. We went through several different neighborhoods and areas. The guided were very knowledgeable and since it was smaller group, we got all our questions answered. My friend and I highly recommend this tour company for your Copenhagen trip.

Wonderful walk!

I joined the Copenhagen Contrasts tour. It was such a personal and attentive experience uncovering corners of the inner city you wouldn’t necessarily have visited yourself. Maybritt, our guide, was truly accommodating and great company.
