The experience

Combine a guided walk, a ride on the public canal ferry, and the famous guard ceremony

Discover Copenhagen in a friendly, personal way on this private walking tour
Experience iconic sights, hidden corners, and a ride on the public canal ferry, the water bus locals use, and the impressive Changing of the Guards at Amalienborg Palace.

After the ferry ride, we continue on foot to highlights such as the 17th-century star-shaped fortress Kastellet and the world-famous Little Mermaid. A cozy café stop along the way gives you time to rest, recharge, and enjoy conversation with your guide.

The 9:00 AM tour concludes at 12:00 PM with the full Changing of the Guards, while the 1:00 PM tour ends at 4:00 PM with the smaller ceremonial guard change. The 11:00 AM, 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM tours also end at Amalienborg Palace.

The half-hour tours (9:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM) end in Nyhavn; on the 9:30 AM tour we see the full Changing of the Guards at noon first, and on the 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM tours the smaller guard change.

We start with a relaxed one-hour walk through charming streets, past Copenhagen’s most famous landmarks, and a few hidden gems that most tourists never discover.

Then hop aboard the canal ferry for a refreshing view of the city from the water. Along the way, your local guide shares quirky facts, cultural insights, and captivating stories that bring Copenhagen to life.

Whether traveling solo, as a couple, or with friends, this private tour offers more than sightseeing – it’s a welcoming, memorable experience filled with stories, smiles, and a fresh perspective on the city.

In high season the canal ferry can be full on busy weekends and sunny afternoons. We then walk the scenic route of about 2 km along the canals instead – same amazing views, just on foot.

Start: Copenhagen Central Station
The main hall of Copenhagen Central Station, meeting point for the walking tour

We begin at Copenhagen Central Station, a historic and bustling hub that connects the city. Let’s dive into its story and set the tone for our exploration.

Tivoli Gardens
The main entrance of Tivoli Gardens decorated for Christmas

We’ll stop outside the enchanting Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, and we will share its fascinating history and its role in inspiring Walt Disney.

New Carlsberg Glyptotek
The domed entrance of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek art museum

Glyptoteket, a glimpse of grandeur from the outside We’ll stop by the impressive Glyptoteket, one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful buildings. Founded by Carlsberg’s founder Carl Jacobsen, this museum is known not only for its world-class art collection, but also for its stunning architecture. From the outside, you’ll get a great view of its grand façade and the glass dome of the tropical winter garden inside. A quick but memorable stop that blends culture, history, and a touch of elegance.

Christiansborg
A royal carriage with white horses in the riding ground at Christiansborg Palace

Together, we’ll explore the history and importance of Christiansborg Palace, the seat of Danish democracy. We’ll uncover tales of kings, queens, and modern politics, and there’s a good chance we’ll also see the royal horses.

The Royal Library
A small group with their host by the fountain in the Royal Library Garden

We conclude this part of our tour at the iconic Black Diamond, a stunning piece of modern architecture that serves as a cultural and literary hub for Copenhagen. From here, we’ll continue our journey with a ride on the public canal ferry, the water bus locals use, offering unique views of the city from the water.

The Canal Ferry
Guests and their host on the deck of the public canal ferry in Copenhagen harbour

The tour includes a ride of about 25 minutes on the public canal ferry, the water bus locals use, from the Black Diamond past Børsen, the Opera House and Nyhavn, with great views of the city’s canals. On weekdays, we almost always have the ferry to ourselves. As it’s a public ferry, seats can’t be reserved, and in high season it can be full on busy weekends and sunny afternoons (or occasionally canceled). If that happens, we walk the scenic route of about 2 km along the canals instead. To stay on schedule for the Changing of the Guards on the 09:00 AM tour, we shorten the route slightly elsewhere, and the total walking distance is 5 to 7 km. In this case, the tour includes a few different – but equally great – highlights, such as iconic Nyhavn and all the main sights normally seen from the ferry.

The Opera (Seen from ferry)
The Copenhagen Opera House seen across the harbour

From the canal ferry on Copenhagen’s scenic canals, you’ll get a fantastic view of the Royal Danish Opera House – an architectural masterpiece sitting proudly by the waterfront. Designed by renowned architect Henning Larsen, this modern landmark is one of the most expensive opera houses ever built and a true icon of Danish design.

Nyhavn (Seen from ferry)
Colourful houses and old wooden ships along the canal in Nyhavn

From the canal ferry, we’ll get a brief but beautiful stop at Nyhavn, Copenhagen’s most iconic harbor. With its colorful 17th-century townhouses and lively atmosphere, this historic waterfront is a must-see, and the perfect spot to return to after the tour!

The Gefion fountain
Guide sharing a Nordic myth about the goddess Gefion with guests at The Gefion Fountain by the Copenhagen waterfront

Gefion Fountain is one of Copenhagen’s most impressive landmarks, located near the harbor and Kastellet fortress. This stunning fountain depicts the Norse goddess Gefion driving a group of oxen, symbolizing the legendary creation of Zealand. A must-see stop, it combines mythology, history, and beautiful craftsmanship, making it a perfect spot for photos and storytelling during your tour.

Kastellet
A small group walking between the long red barracks in Kastellet fortress

As part of our walk, we’ll explore Kastellet, one of the best-preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe. This historic site, built in the 1600s, is still an active military area but also a peaceful green oasis in the heart of Copenhagen. As we stroll through its scenic pathways, you’ll see the iconic windmill, historic barracks, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the resident swans.

Churchill Park

Churchill Park is a quiet green oasis in central Copenhagen, dedicated to the memory of Danish resistance fighters during World War II. Located next to the historic Kastellet fortress and near the Little Mermaid, the park features monuments honoring those who fought for Denmark's freedom, including a statue of Winston Churchill. It’s a meaningful stop for those interested in history, set in peaceful and scenic surroundings.

Kastelsmøllen

Kastellet, one of Europe’s best-preserved star fortresses, is a perfect blend of history and natural beauty. Built in the 17th century, this historic military site offers a peaceful escape with its grassy ramparts and scenic surroundings. On this stop, we’ll walk along the fortress walls, taking in panoramic views of the area and enjoying the serene atmosphere. As we stroll, we’ll see Kastelsmøllen, a charming old windmill that stands as a reminder of the fortress’s utilitarian past. Kastellet is more than just a historical site – it’s a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city, where the past meets the present in one of Copenhagen’s most picturesque settings.

The Marble Church
The Marble Church at the end of Frederiksgade, Copenhagen

Marvel at the breathtaking Marble Church, officially known as Frederik's Church, an architectural gem in Copenhagen. Completed in 1894 after more than 150 years of construction, this iconic landmark features one of the largest domes in Europe, inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. As we pause here, you'll hear stories of its fascinating history, including the challenges of its construction and its significance in Denmark's royal and religious heritage. From this spot, you’ll also enjoy stunning views of Amalienborg Palace, the royal family's residence, just a short walk away.

Amalienborg
Guests walking through Frederiksstaden towards the Marble Church, next to Amalienborg

Step into the heart of Danish royalty at Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the Danish royal family since 1794. This stunning complex consists of four identical Rococo-style palaces surrounding an elegant octagonal courtyard, with the equestrian statue of King Frederik V as its centerpiece. As we explore the area, you’ll learn about the history of the monarchy, the daily routines of the royal family, and the significance of the ceremonial Changing of the Guard, which takes place here every day at 12.00. From the courtyard, enjoy beautiful views of the Marble Church and the waterfront, showcasing Copenhagen's blend of history and charm.

The Changing Of Guards
The Royal Life Guards band marching at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen

The tours on the hour end at Amalienborg Palace with the Changing of the Guards. The half-hour tours (9:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM) end in Nyhavn; on the 9:30 AM tour we see the full Changing of the Guards at noon first, and on the 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM tours the smaller guard change.

If you join the 09:00 AM tour, we conclude at Amalienborg Palace just as the full Changing of the Guards begins at 12:00 PM. You'll have the perfect spot to witness this iconic royal tradition as the guards march into the palace square, sometimes accompanied by the Royal Danish Band.

If you join the 1:00 PM tour, we end at the same location, where you’ll still experience a smaller version of the guard change as the new shift quietly relieves the old. While not as ceremonial as the noon event, it offers a more peaceful and authentic glimpse into daily royal tradition.

Incredible tour with Kris, but even better memories

I want to start off by mentioning that Kris was the most incredible tour guide we’ve had across the four continents we’ve traveled so far. My mom has a disability so we booked a walking tour in order to ensure that we weren’t rushed or holding anyone behind.

The private tour can obviously be tailored but we allowed Kris to do her thing and we are so happy we did. Yes, we saw everything a tourist should but learned so much more about what Copenhagen has to offer and what life in Denmark is like.

We were almost disappointed that we had to say goodbye after the end of our tour because it was incredible.

-The private tour cost does vary depending on what you are looking for and the length.

- we had a two person group and felt so well taken care of.

Must take tour iin Copenhagen

Our group of 7 adults had a fantastic time walking ( and a ferry ride) around Copenhagen with our two guides , Karl Eric and Kris.. We loved it -even on a drizzly day. They were extremely informative, patient and helpful giving us advice for continued exploration. They recommended a local lunch spot , walked us to it and secured us a table. They even joined us for lunch. Take this tour.

A bespoke tour that beautifully met our needs.

Our private walking tour with our guide, Martin, was excellent. He listened carefully to our needs at the beginning of the tour and adapted to meet those needs. For example, we didn't want to spend our day endlessly wandering around looking at buildings and monuments. We really wanted to know what it would be like to live in Copenhagen. We wanted to learn about the soul and the pulse of the city. Therefore, after visiting some beautiful sights, as depicted in the attached pictures, we exchanged thoughts and ideas about our respective countries and cultures over lunch, which was delightful. This is why I like to do private tours. You can work with the guide to create a unique, bespoke experience that directly meets your needs. Martin did exactly that for us, and we highly recommend his services.

Excellent way to see Copenhagen

Our first visit to Copenhagen and this tour was the perfect introduction to the city. Our guide, Jacob, was excellent. He told us the history of Denmark, pointed out interesting landmarks, suggested other activities and told entertaining anecdotes. The ferry ride broke up the walking and made for a very fun morning. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone!

Fantastic private tour

We loved our private tour with Michael! He had lots of great information and was very entertaining. Dress warmly if you’re going in winter; it was cold by the water. We debated between the two and three hour tour and opted for the longer one. I didn’t think it dragged or felt too long. Overall, would recommend for families or friend groups visiting Copenhagen!
